DESCRIPTION:
Unfortunately, Watson does not stop with basic instructions. Old classics, such as Nancy Renfro's Puppets for Play Production (Funk & Wagnals, 1969; o.p.), are far more effective in encouraging children to explore puppetry creatively. Each page is cluttered with extra instructions and asides that fill the margins. . From School Library Journal Grade 2-5-- This book begins with a picture-book story, told in staid present tense prose, of three little pigs looking for something to do on a rainy day. There are then several pages of instructions on making puppets, stages, and scenery, as well as tips on everything from scripts to tickets, before returning to the slight story that ends with the pigs presenting a play. Children old enough to use the book as a guide will be put off by the too-cute picture-book format. The instructions for puppet making, numbered and set off in a box, are adequate, if rather uninspiring. They decide to make puppets. --Karen James
A combination picture/activity book all about how to put on a puppet show from start to finish. Step-by-step instructions are enhanced by hints and diagrams and include cautions to ask for adult help with more difficult tasks.. Charles, Bertram and Ralph, the pig brothers from "The Little Pig's First Cookbook" stage a production for their friends. Following the pig's backstage preparations, young readers will learn how to make puppets, write an original script, put up a stage, create scenery, make programmes and tickets, and even rustle up some refreshments
