He is widely regarded as the one of the most skilled commanders of desert warfare and, in contrast to other leaders of Nazi Germany, is considered to have been a chivalrous and humane officer. The letters of his adjutant provide a unique picture of Rommel during his time in Libya. One of his unofficial tasks, for example, was to respond in Rommel’s name to much of the fan mail that arrived at the Afrikakorps HQ.Hans-Albrecht Schraepler was only seven years old when his father died. The cache of letters was held by his mother and remained untouched for sixty years. He also complains that the Italian were poor Allies, lacking training and leadership, and that Berlin regarded North Africa as a theater of only secondary importance.Schraepler also provides insights into Rommel’s character – his dynamism and tactical skill, along with the growing ‘cult of personality’ which seemed to surround him. Erwin Rommel, Hitler’s so-called ‘Desert Fox’, is possibly the most famous German Field-Marshal of WWII.

In his WWII letters home to his wife from North Africa Major Hans-Joachim Schraepler provides considerable insight on the war in North Africa, the German Africa Corps and their Italian allies, Erwin Rommel, and the British. The author makes it clear that North Africa was a side show for Hitler with Rommel and his soldiers receiving very little support. Further, he writes with tremendous respect and admiration for the British soldier, specially for the Royal Air Force and British. "Liked it's nuance on the day--sincerely" according to John N. Duquette. A personal account of war by a soldier recorded in letters to his wife. Not for the casual student of WWII; but if you are familiar with events in North Africa you will appreciate this first-person narrative. A man's view as observed from behind the curtain of general history. Liked it's nuance on the day--sincerely.
